Personally I always considered the human interaction to be part of the equation for performing QC.  I don't recall anything that specifically stated that but I could not see where the human was not an integral part of the process.  So in my lab the manual method would be QC'd as well. Your secondary methods only need to be QC'd on the day of use.

donellda reacted to Ensis01 in Units (about to expire) transfer from one hospital to other
At a hospital I worked at (long time ago) we received short dated products from several smaller facilities. There was an official agreement between participating hospitals and ARC, who provided transfer forms. When we received units we checked boxes on the form for correct packing, in temp and unit numbers. We kept a copy of the form, a copy went to the transferring hospital and a copy to ARC. So definitely a procedure as the transferring hospital received credit from ARC for the units transferred (unless they did not arrive in temp).

donellda got a reaction from jtrick in BloodBankTalk: QC of multiple reagent racks
Each reagent requires QC on day of use. We had multiple reagent racks of our routine antisera at our facility. We rotated the racks for QC so that each rack would be QCd  once or twice per week depending on how many racks were in use.  Each rack was checked daily for lot confirmation and expiration date.  QC for special antisera was performed on the day of use as required. I believe that the question did not offer all of the options that are required to answered correctly, in my opinion.

My sympathies, Darren. That's a horrible situation.
It's generally accepted that the best way to minimize HUMAN error is automation (with the proviso that the systems are well designed). If a LIS allows post-dated entries, it would seem logical that "scanning" would be the best option to back-fill the missing data. And, probably a lot quicker.
If one is forced to perform manual data entry, the process should probably include a second check (verification), preferably by a second individual.
Either way, not fun for anyone. Good luck.

We are experiencing all of that.
The fact that my hospital refuses to even think about sign on bonuses makes it even worse.  The hospital down the street has an $8-12K bonus and their benefits and pay were already better than ours.
I saw a few weeks ago that a hospital in Philadelphia is offering a $20K sign on bonus.

Retired SBB.  I have several Immunohematology books from the 70s and 80s published by AABB for workshops and seminars.  Also, others such as published for other Immunohematologists, for example P.Issitt and others in the field.
If anyone may have any interest in owning these hardback books I would gladly share.  It would be sad to just recycle, which I have seen happen to other previous medical books.
If you would like me to list any particular year's books, titles or authors just leave a reply to this post or to me separately.
After a month or so if there is no interest, they are off to be recycled! 🤔

My favourite John Judd quote from a University of Michigan Symposium I heard him at. "Phenotypically matched RBC units for a corpse is not a medical breakthrough." If the patient needs blood get them blood, worry about the rest later. RIP John Judd
