  5. Do we have to repeat positive screening test of infectious transmitted disease from blood bag or only repeating the specimen is enough?

  6. I seem to recall that an adult RBC unit must be at least 200ml, and a plasma unit at least 150ml, but I can't find any reference to corroborate my brain, nor can I find a standard, CFR or suggestion that says a minimum volume is required for either of these units. Can anyone help? Is there such a thing as a minimum volume? We are splitting our LTOWB into an RBC and a liquid plasma, and sometimes the plasma units are getting close to that 150ml mark. Just want to be sure I won't be sending out a too-small unit!

Apheresis RBC donors are deferred for 16 weeks but due to cumulative RBC loss, they cannot get a third collection in (with our calculations) within the 12 month period. Wouldn't it be a lot easier (for us) if AABB/FDA extended the deferral to 18 weeks?

The updated CDC map is a major change re: Mexico. We had many deferrals for travel to Riviera Maya which is no longer a risk area. It's difficult to tell from the map- but are the ruins (Tulum, etc.) still a malaria risk? Our employees are asked to probe for trips outside the resorts.

  13. Hello - wondering how everyone is submitting the annual blood establishment registration for 48 hours LVDS single step method for apheresed platelets? Our donor center collects apheresed platelets, samples at 48 hours post collection, and submits to our hospital Microbiology department for culture on the BacT Alert. After the initial culture is found to be negative for at least 12 hours, we label the apheresed platelets to expire on day 7. How should we register our platelets with the FDA? Is it line 11 "Platelets" with bacterial testing checked or is it line 13 "Platelets Extended Dating" with bacterial testing checked? Or should we not check "Bacterial Te…

  14. Started by spavlis,

I'm looking for some advice from some experienced Donor Centers. We are recently taking over some "new" to us activies, which includes Final Labeling. My question is whether ABO/Rh needs to be confirmed by a serological test from an attached segment AFTER labeling the product? I can't find anything in the AABB standards that require additional serological testing from a segment after labeling. As a matter of fact, I don't see anything that requires a collection facility to perform any segment testing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Stephanie

  15. Started by dcubed,

I recently started donating platelets. Being an old retired blood banker I was kind of shocked at the end of the collection when the platelets were removed and were violently shaken to get them resuspended. I recall, when I was still working, doing a volume reduction procedure on platelets and we were taught to always be very gentle with the platelets and resuspend them gently. So, I guess that I am wondering if this violent resuspension is harming the platelets?

  16. Our collection center currently uses the Povidone-Iodine Duo-Swab 2-step process for preparing the venipuncture site for blood donor collection. We use ChoraPrep as the secondary method for donors who are sensitive to iodine. Following our recent AABB inspection, our arm prep process using the Duo-Swab product was questioned because the phlebotomists were not allowing swab 1 and swab 2 to completely dry prior to proceeding to the next step. As we investigated this observation, we found that it can take anywhere from 2-3 minutes for swab 1 to dry, and a full 5 minutes for swab 2 to dry. We would like to find another product to use for arm prep that is a one step proces…

  17. Started by BenchTech,

I'm currently looking for anyone who maybe able to give me some feedback about CLIA regulations and the donor world. To explain I'm working for a research company that is setting up a laboratory with a Certificate of Compliance to perform CBC's on donors prior to the collection of MNC's. All my experience is clinical and I have never worked in the donor world before. I'm wondering how some of the CLIA regulations apply. For example having a physician order for the CBC. I have reached out to our state CLIA inspector multiple times with no response, which is frustrating enough and I'm looking for some guidance. Thanks

  22. Greetings! Is anyone experiencing unacceptable residual leukocyte quality control for leukoreduced red cell units using the Terumo WB-RP product? We have increased our QC sample number from 10/month to 60/month now that we have the ability to use automated residual WBC testing, and are experiencing some unexplained QC failures. Thank you in advance for your feedback!
