  2. Hi Everyone, What would be considered an appropriate length of time for training a new employee coming to work in the lab performing viral marker testing on donor samples or someone coming to work in the hospital distribution department who will be taking blood orders and possibly initiating some quarantines? If you currently work or have worked at a blood center (regardless of size), was there an established time limit for training, for example 3 months or 6 months, before the new employee was signed off and working independently ? Any info will help, Thanks

Just wondering what other blood collecting facilities do for potential donors with active adult asthma? Do you defer the donor? Are there any exceptions to this defer, like exercise induced asthma? Thanks:p Stephanie

We are looking into purchasing a small CBC analyzer (Sysmex pocH-100i) to run platelet counts for product yields. It will require doing 1:2 or 1:3 dilutions, since the linearity is only 999x10^3. We have reservations about running dilutions, since we have noticed falsely low plt counts when we've done this in the past on a Beckman-Coulter AC.T Diff2. We currently have a neighboring lab run our counts on a larger analyzer with higher linearity that does not require dilutions. Has anyone had any experience with the Sysmex pocH-100i or have recommendations for an similar priced analyzer ($10K)?

Are apheresis platelets acceptable if the room temperature of the collection facility was 26 degrees celsius at the time of collection? AABB standard 5.6.5.1 says that "Apheresis platelets shall be transported and stored in a manner intended to cool the Apheresis platelets toward a temperature range of 20 to 24 celsius". The platelets were 26 degrees celsius when they reached the processing lab.

We currently do not label FFP collected from CMV sero-negative donors as CMV negative, the working theory (I assume) is that the low temperatures required for the freezing and storage of FFP kill or inactivate the virus. Recently we've had two customers question this decision. I cannot find any literature discussing this specific issue, does anyone have any information regarding CMV and FFP?

Hi -- Does anyone have experience collecting and processing blood donations from healthy volunteers for research purposes? Not for transfusions. Are regulations for this donation purpose that are different than donating blood for transfusions? Do you have any process guidelines, screening questionnaires, protocols, SOPs, consents you can share? Can volunteers be paid and are there regulations on the amount they can be paid? Your help and direction on good resources is desired and much appreciated.

We are a hospital based donor and apheresis service. We perform many outpatient phlebotomies during business hours. However, we do not bring our on-call apheresis RN in after hours to perform requested inpatient phlebotomy. We have had several requests lately. Can you share your practices for after hours therapeutic phlebotomy?
