JeanB
Do you require a type and screen ordered if the patient just needs plasma? or platelets and etc? or just an ABO/Rh?

JeanB
Thank you for all the response! I thought it makes sense just for an ABO/Rh, but so far almost all the hospitals I have worked at require a Type and Screen (which require them to have a blood bank armband). Their reasoning behind this was because it's still a "transfusion".

The “always type and screen” does have the advantage that it keeps it simple from the ordering perspective in that if red cells are needed later you are ready. Plus by giving no choice about what to order it means you do not have to explain the difference when it is busy David Saikin
AMcCord
Our order sets in Epic are built with the required tests for each product type. Providers click all the boxes. If there is a current T&S or blood type on record (witin 72 hours), whichever applies, they get a message telling them that the test is a duplicate, consider deleting. If they don't delete the duplicates its a simple matter for us to delete as duplicate when we bring the order into the lab system. Our previous HIS didn't allow use of that kind of order set, so one win for Epic. On days when Epic is frustrating, I remind myself of that nice function.
