  1. From the My Two Cents Dept... I would just point out that it is important that people doing testing understand what and why they are doing what they are doing. I guess this goes without saying. I am not a fan of throwing computer AI at problems when staff have trouble understanding what it is they are doing. I get it that with staff shortages and what not, that generalists have a lot of hats to wear, but a computer algorithm should never be a substitute for appropriate education and regular, effective performance evaluation. Neonate Transfusions

I think it depends on your process. If the hospital is performing a non-crossmatch setup, then not required is appropriate. Our pediatric hospital usually performs electronic crossmatches on neonates-the expiration date corresponds to the date the neonate is 4 months old.

  7. I'm sure you are right about exaggeration. This is something that genuinely worries me about Health and Safety (amongst other things). If they keep making all sorts of claims where things are DANGEROUS, the old thing about "crying wolf" will occur when something that is REALLY DANGEROUS gets ignored, because people get apathetic about H&S because of exaggeration.

  8. Deionized water is not recommended because it is potentially corrosive to the chamber and baskets. Distilled or tap water is OK. We have very 'hard' water in our area, so we use distilled in ours with CleanBath. We drain weekly and have never had to clean up mineral stains. The manual suggests using "stain, scale, or rust remover suitable for stainless steel" to remove stains and discoloration - can't recommend a specific product since I haven't needed one. As Scott says, CLR is good stuff - I use it at home. Just make sure you get the chamber well rinsed to remove chemical traces before you put your thawer back into service.
