Reference text? Anyone? Anyone?

Hi Late,

Could you give us a little more information about the Blood Bank (how many staff and of what grade, how many units you cross-match and how many samples you do, the "state of knowledge" of the people who will be reading the books, whether it is general Blood Banking or Reference, or a bit of both, etc).

There are some excellent books out there, but some of them are extremely specialised, and so may be no good for certain Blood Banks.

Hi Malcolm,

We're a staff of 12, a central lab servicing four satellite labs (meaning we are their reference for antibodies). The general level of staff knowledge is quite high, but we also train our own staff and those working in the satellite labs (satellites are usually multiple-disciplinary). I'd say on the basis of that, we need either a bit of both (general and reference) or one of each.

I think we have at least 30 - 100 specimens per day, plus a lot of antenatal work, we'd crossmatch at least 20-40 units per day all up.

Cheers,

Fran

The 3rd edition of the book was published towards the end of 2012, with an extra author.

It is now Reid ME, Lomas-Francis C, Olsson ML.  The Blood Group Antigen FactsBook.  3rd edition, 2012, Academic Press.  I have had the pleasure of writing a review for the British Journal of Biomedical Science, and I can tell you that it is superb (the book I mean, not my own prose!!!!!!!!!).

Also now out, of course, is the 3rd edition of Geoff Daniels' book, Human Blood Group (which is also superb).

I hesitate to say this, as I wrote one of the chapters myself, but another book that people may find of use is Fundamentals of Biomedical Science - Transfusion and Transplantation Science.  Editor Robin Knight, 2013, 1st edition, Oxford University Press.  ISBN 978-0-19-953328-2, Library of Congress Control Number 201294197.

Anyone know what happened to this book, the link is dead.

There was some confusion between me and the author.  Originally they granted me permission to post the book, but have since retracted that permission.  I have removed the documents, sorry for the inconvenience.
