Serological Centrifuge Calibration/Function Check, How often?

TRM.31900 Serologic Centrifuge Checks Phase II

Mechanical timers on serologic centrifuges, and the speed of the centrifuge, are checked for accuracy every 6 months.

COM.30600 Maintenance/Function Checks Phase II

Appropriate maintenance and function checks are performed and documented for all instruments (e.g. analyzers) and equipment (e.g. centrifuges) following a defined schedule, at least as frequent as specified by the manufacturer.

Based on the above requirements, how often do you perform a serologic function check by actual centrifugation (varying centrifugation time) of test tubes with serum + cells looking at strength of agglutination, ease of resuspension, delineation of button, etc.?

We do timers and RPM checks quarterly, or after major repairs. We do functional checks (optimal spin time) annually, or after major repairs.

Digital timers don't need to be done, only analog.  BME does my rpms semiannually;  optimal spin times are done on receipT, after major repairs, if there is a change in rpms or cell buttoning, and finally - when I have a student (or 2).

• Be aware - if you use the Sorvall cellwasher Plus (CW2 plus) the manufacturer requires quarterly speed and timer checks.  We didn't catch this change during installation - but our AABB/CAP assessor did.

I'm with David, except that RPMs on centrifuges and the Sorvall cell washer are checked quarterly here.

Make sure to also check your state regs (if applicable). NYS Dept of Health requires timer/RPM checks quarterly.
