donellda
We always use group O cells. Currently we give Group O, CMV negative, sickle cell negative because of our patient population and irradiated.
John C. Staley
On the other hand we always go with type specific unless there is a reason not to.
jssa1891
Don't forget mom's type has to be figured in too. That's one reason why many places feel that using Group O is simpler.
Cliff
I agree, we only give type compatible (non-O) after performing a circulating anti-A/B. Don't forget mom's type has to be figured in too. That's one reason why many places feel that using Group O is simpler.
MicheleKay
We give group O until the baby is over 4 months. After 4 months if the neonate is still in the hospital we request a type and screen and then give type specific. However, if a designated unit was available for the neonate we follow a different protocol.
John C. Staley
Don't forget mom's type has to be figured in too. That's one reason why many places feel that using Group O is simpler. That is one of the reasons we would not give type specific but I will argue long and hard that by giving type O you are just adding fuel to the fire by adding more Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-A,B especially if you are not using ADSOL units. I can't believe I'm saying this but simpler is not always better.
yaya
5.16.2 If a non-group-O neonate is to receive non-group-O Red Blood Cells that are not compatible with the maternal ABO group, the neonate’s serum or plasma shall be tested for anti-A or anti-B. it is just like a hint to use group O is it?
