ABO incompatability XM testing with Gel card

I just saw something regarding gel crossmatching. If gel crossmatching patients with antibodies you have to perform an ISXM for ABO Incompatability. We currently do electronic crossmatch which determines electronically ABO Incompatibility and there are hard stops in the computer for it. Is this good enough so as not to do the ISXM?

Have you validated your computer system to show that when you perform an AHG XM it will not allow you to set up, crossmatch, allocate ABO incompatible? It should work this way if your ABO/Rh compatibility tables are the same for EC and AHG. In our system they are the same. Our system has been validated to show that you cannot set up ABO/Rh incompatible RBCs when performing an AHG crossmatch without immediate spin. Tested all patient ABO/Rh types (8 - did not test Bombay etc) against all donor ABO/Rh types. Of course, during a down time Immediate spin crossmatches are performed and if an AHG XM is needed an immediate spin XM is also performed. The memo specifically states that EC is allowed to detect ABO incompatibility. Therefore, if the EC and AHG work from the same table and it has been validated............
