Gloria
The transfusion service where I work sets up leucopoor units on females under 50 to prevent CMV. Is anyone else doing this?
John C. Staley
I've never heard of that protocol before. Any idea where it came from?
Gloria
I have no idea, I am trying to get rid of that policy and not having much luck. It was implemented by the previous blood bank supervisor who now happens to be the lab director. :-(
Cliff
Hi Gloria, Not saying I agree or disagree with the policy, but we give leukopoor (CMV safe) to women known to be pregnant. Possibly that is the origin of this policy. The transfusion service where I work sets up leucopoor units on females under 50 to prevent CMV. Is anyone else doing this? David Saikin
We give leuko's to everyone. Do you all feel that they are considered CMV negative? I've seen other opinions.
John C. Staley
We also give leukoreduced to everyone because it's easier to manage one inventory than two and trying to figure out who really needs it and who dosen't, as noted by Gloria's question, can really be a pain. Our blood supplier currently supplies every thing leukoreduced and will actually charge us more if we were to request non-leukoreduced RBCs. My suggestion for Gloria would be to go all leukoreduced if it is an option. Then you don't have to worry about who gets it and who dosen't. Gloria
I wish we could do that, but our supplier charges more for leukoreduced units, so it is not an option.
S.Hunt
Gloria,All of the literature reviewed by our blood bank shows , only CMV Negative units tested serologically should be considered CMV negative. We only transfuse Leukoreduced Red Cell products.
