Baby Banker
We are in the process of bringing Ortho's Vision Swift online. One of the things we would like to do is put unit confirmations on it. We've had an issue when we used the labels from the back of the units to put on the sample tubes. Apparently there is a number on the labels from the back that is different from the front label. This is causing us trouble when we try to put units on the Vision for retyping. Has anyone encountered this and found a way around it?
Ensis01
The front and back label bar codes are identical. It maybe that when you bring the unit into your LIS system the double zeros and check digit at the end of the unit number are not used but when the vision scans the label for ABO conformation they are, thereby creating this discrepancy. Baby Banker
We have found them to be different. The suppler has confirmed this.
Baby Banker
Yes. That is how they are different.
AMcCord
Not a Vision user, but can you use logic in your middleware/engine to remove the unwanted characters? Is there a setting in the Vision software for how the barcode is read by the analyzer? Ensis01

jayinsat
At our facility (MEDITECH User), when we bring units into inventory, the LIS automatically orders a retype test (front type only) and generates a specimen barcode label. That is matched up to the unit and is placed on the specimen tube that is loaded on the analyzer (we use IMMUCOR ECHO Lumena). The LIS programs the analyzer just like any other patient specimen and results are transmitted back to the LIS when complete. This is a very efficient system. Have you considered that route? The only issue we have with donor confirmations is when you get multiple containers per unit #. They have to be manually programmed or done by hand and entered into BBLIS. We run those units one at a time so we can select the matching unit in utilities to bring the results in. THEN we run the 2nd unit. Kind of a hassle if you don't notice that you have a double red. And since we don't often get both units from a double red collection, we usually don't notice until the Echo yells at us about a duplicate specimen. Gotta have something to keep us on our toes I guess!
