Can someone walk me through quoting another post. It may be my browser but I've tried it several times and it does not work! Thanks
  2. Just found the bags! Ordering them 1st of the month! In my head I was thinking I would need the butterfly tubing to attach the bag. But if a straight syringe needle will work even better. That's what we'll order! Thank you again you just made my day and several of my patients will be very happy.
  3. We found some 20g butterflies to order and I have to find those Macopharma bags! That would seriously change my life haha If the 20 are still too small. I'll see if my supervisor can find some 19g to order for us. Thank you so much!
  4. I'm having the worst time with therapeutic phlebotomies. Can someone give me some tips and pointers. I'm a novice to put it nicely at normal phlebotomies. I often experience a tugging or pulling feeling on the big needle. What is happening in that situation ? I have another patient who has a huge juicy vein but there is so much swelling around the needle site that I can't finish the procedure. I have another who has no veins and I have to have a phleb help me syringe him. We are working on ordering 20 gauge needles to help with the syringe process. Do they make donor bags with smaller needles. We obviously aren't concerned with hemolysis. Thanks for any help !
  5. Do you have to sign up or the educational challenge or the dry lab challenge ? I see it mentioned on the instructions but didn't get shipped with my survey?
  6. Sorry to bring a post back from the dead. We haven't missed a survey in so long! I start and we have an unsatisfactory ! We aren't in any trouble YET but now I have to fill out this evaluation as to why it happened/corrective steps to solve the problem and corrective action to avoid the problem in the future. And said employee that missed the survey won't be here for a week! I have no idea what she did wrong. GGGRRR Rant over.
  7. Looks like that last time we emergency released blood was July 2015. And the last emergency that used type specific blood was March 2015. I'm new to the lab and even newer to this blood bank sup position. If I stay here long enough I'll probably try and make some changes for now I just want to make sure we are doing everything correctly!
  8. yep! Id say they are still a little old fashion. I was shocked when they said they were doing Electronic XM's. They way they have explained it to me is that they like to have a forward and reverse done very quickly for emergencies. We only keep 10 O neg units on the shelf and we are 70+ miles away from our blood supplier. In the state of emergency after they have a forward and reverse done they will emergency release type specific blood. This is how our pathologists like it to be.
  9. I don't see any wording explaining it. I'm accustomed to mostly gel and the Provue. Here they do a forward and reverse in tubes but a manual gel antibody screen. I'm not sure if I'll ever get them to go full gel.
  10. My hospital is using what they call Mobile Care Phlebotomy. The patient is given an armband at admissions with a bar code. Once they have orders that barcoded label on the patient is scanned and labels are printed on a handheld printer. They label at bedside and we have gotten rid of the second sample ABO/retype. On the first visit the patient is required to have an IS XM. After that they have an Electronic XM. It's been going great.
  11. My current bloodbank procedure has that we use an unspun sample of blood to do our forward. Is that wrong?
  12. Why do they come in the two separate bags to begin with ?
  13. I used to personally check every transfusion for time checked out/time started/time finished and my pre/15/and post ( just as the BB bench tech) At the hospital I'm at now I don't get to see any of it and I'm the supervisor. It's weird.
  14. I have got to add this to our policy! I had some snotty guy come in drinking from a Styrofoam cup. At the time I had only been the blood bank sup for about 3 days So I didn't feel brave enough to really tell him off but I told him in the future not to do it again. He said nothing but glared at me with his cup. He then barely even looked over the paper as I called it off and then folded it up before I was done. IF he acts like that again he'll be getting a piece of my mind and a call to his boss!
  15. Well that's convenient! We are in the deep South and if I am stumped I'll usually just call around to local hospitals to see if they've got a history on a tricky patient. But that would be nice to have a set up like that.
  16. UBS was telling us all about it. I should have known it costs money!!
  17. Anyone ever used NPAR (National Patient Antibody Registry)?
  18. I was always taught not to use enhancement on PW techniques because you do not want to enhance a cold.
  19. It's come up that when our blood supplier (UBS) does hospital to hospital platelet transfers, we are responsible for testing the temperature of the platelet when it comes in. Do any of you also have to do this? Do you keep a digital thermometer on hand for this? What kind do you use? If I buy a new one will I have to incorporate calibrating and temp checks on it? * sorry for all the questions I'm a new supervisor. Thanks!
  20. Thank you! They were on the right track and antigen typed for M but they were still confused about why. I'm not sure if we have a policy/procedure for doing panels at RT, I'll have to further look into that. I'm a new BB supervisor and I"m trying to get as many reference charts, key things to remember and what not. My entire BB staff are floaters who don't get a lot of experience.
  21. Is there a good explanation in a technical manual to better explain to my co workers how to handle this situation : positive antibody screen with a negative antibody panel
