  1. Malcolm, in the U.S. it's a euphemism for oral sex. --- We QC our expired panel cells with the corresponding commercial antisera to whatever antigen we are using that particular cell to rule out with. (Example: If using an expired K+ cell to rule out Anti-K, we test the cell with commerical Anti-K)
  2. We don't use Ortho, all of the reagents that we use come with a kit insert.
  3. Only the blood bank techs have access to the file, there are 6 of us right now. We don't have a way to ensure that people don't delete items in error, don't fill it out, etc. We do print it periodically to have a hard copy incase of downtime/data loss.
  4. When a new bottle is opened we are supposed to check the speadsheet and update the information. The same goes for when discarding a bottle. Unfortunately that doesn't always happen.
  5. We use an excel spreadsheet that is accessible to all of our blood bank techs. Each reagent has a tab on the spreadsheet. We record the date of kit insert for each lot number/shipment we receive and save/implement a copy when they change. I've attached a blank copy of the spreadsheet if you want to look at it.
  6. If you were interested in reading the newspaper article... we had a few good laughs in our lab over it http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1363108/Researchers-suggest-rare-blood-disorder-responsible-Henry-VIIIs-rapid-decline-failure-father-children.html
  7. I may be incorrect, but I believe when a person has gender reassignment surgery they are legally considered to be the new gender. If the person is now a female and is having sex with a male, isn't that a heterosexual relationship? The point of the MSM deferral is because HIV or other sexually transmitted pahtogens are more prevalent in homosexual males who engage in "risky behavior" isn't it?
