Kellpos's Achievements

  1. I am recently retired, having spent 30+ years in transfusion services as a bench tech & as a supervisor. I'm thinking of going back to work as a per-diem, maybe twice a week. My only concern, besides getting my license in California & passing an exam, is who would hire me. At what age would that be. As an employer, would you think twice about hiring someone that is in his 60's over someone who is half that age?
  2. Saw the new name today, felt like deleting it & never coming back.
  3. Two unit of O Neg, tagged with a dummy pt name (Emergency 101 or Trauma 1), segments previously taken off, and stored in refrigerator. The blood is handed off immediately (in cooler) and issued under dummy name, along with request for uncrossmatched blood. When pt demograpics arrive, the units are returned in computer, then allocated to "real" pt, and tags are sent along. Proceed with testing on pt's sample, when it comes. No waiting, no pressure. Too bad it's not being done in my present institution!
  4. Why wait for another event, and lawsuits - just fire her!
  5. Lets face it, nurses are never going to understand or look up information that is readily available to them. It's easier to just call us. What is needed are electronic armbands (RFID) that have this information. It's probably available, but what hospital administrator is going to sign off on a major upgrade that will benefit everyone.
  6. Positive control is stronger, less fields to read, and the reactions appear cleaner than Immucor. Did anyone notice how unique the dropper is?
  7. Examine the cards before loading them. Look for air bubbles. A few taps on the counter should eliminate them. I find it ironic that once you replace a card in a specific slot that the instrument starts over and reads all the cards again. Sort of a short-term memory loss.
  8. Wondering how many people maintain their individual membership, or just use the institution's membership. I, for one, dropped my membership over 12 years ago!
  9. Don't know if it was posted elsewhere, but can anyone remember using the wbc & rbc pipettes for filling hemacytometers, & using the small rubber tubes to aspirate the cells? ESR's also come to mind, and I hate to think that we did not use squeeze bulbs!
  10. Just remembered when I was in the army, stationed in Hawaii for 27 months (Vietnam era), and working as a med tech, that we would sometimes go to the post movie theater which was free. When the pathologist on call was paged, the camera person would have to write the doctor's name on an acetate sheet & move it into position over the film so everyone in the theater could see it. This was before pagers & cell phones.
  11. I always loved when a surgeon, while waiting for his crossmatches to finish, and not wanting uncrossmatched blood, would state that "it's your fault if my patient dies"!

    Immucor

Immucor does sell PBS in small quantities (500ml). It's added to the 20L saline cubes that are used in the Galileo.
  13. Wow, that took a lot just to get through. It sounds like you had no support. Why wasn't your medical director there at the meeting? Also, where was administration? Inspectors always drop by their office first to let the hospital know they are there (because they feel so important). I would love to see your post make its way to the FDA regional office. Better yet, HHS.gov

    Immucor

Since you're bringing up the oldies, remeber Knickerbocker? Used to use it in NY
  15. Do you know what her rank was? Maybe she was on TDY duty & just waiting out her time til retirement. What part of the country?
