pbaker
Our cord blood specimens are currently collected in a red top clot tube. I would like to change this to EDTA so that the ABO/Rh and DAT testing can be performed on our Neo. The OB department wants the tubes to be sterilized to be taken into the OR for C-sections. Our tube manufacturer states that neither tube should be sterilized by autoclave or ethylene oxide (although OB is already sterilizing the red top, which we did not know). What type tubes do other facilities collect cord blood specimens in and does OB care if they are sterilized for C-section cases?
mollyredone
Our OB department insists on glass red top tubes for cord bloods for normal delivery because they sterilize them in a pack. A C-section cord blood is sent down in a pink top EDTA. They are not sterilized. We do them manually, but I have had no luck getting them to switch to all EDTA. Sandy L
Our cord bloods are collected without anticoagulant in a sterile screw top conical tube. We do harvest an aliquot of free cells and serum, make sure there are no clots, and then run testing on ProVue.
Auntie-D
Can't they just immediately take the placenta into the sluice room and then they don't have to worry about sterile bottles?
Malcolm Needs ☆
It depends AuntieD. If they are collecting cord cells for stem cell transplant as well, then the placenta needs to remain in a sterile environment. Auntie-D
Likewine99
Our OB dept uses regular Blood Bank pink top tubes, not sterilized or anything, specimen collected in delivery room. Sent to us labeled with the Beaker, our LIS, generated label.
Dansket
Delivery provides a red-top and a lavender-top plastic vacutainer tube, not sterilized. We previously used the lavender-tops on ProVue but have switched to the red-tops. The lavender-tops were full of clots and many, many fishing expeditions required to remove them. The red tube has just one large clot that is easily removed.
