Cooler Validation: winter simulation

We have a van transport that takes 6 hours. I set up the 10 bag cooler with 2 gel packs below, 2 to the sides and one above and it kept the temps above 2 Degrees for 6 hours. Doing the same with room temperature heat packs works for platelets. It is important that the gel packs are quarantined for 48 hours before use - any less and they don't work the same...

I took our cooler (and dummy blood bags, & thermometers, etc.) home with me one extremely cold weekend and left it out on my patio, checked the internal temperature in the cooler every half hour for several hours.

Now THAT is dedication! Once I'm home and in the warm, wild horses wouldn't drag me outside!

Stepping out on my patio every hour was more attractive then putting the cooler outside the hospital during cold weather and having to go outside there to check the temp every hour.

(It's not dedication.........more like laziness. If nothing else, I am honest about it.)
