Issuing blood in a cooler

cell1

Recommended Posts

We use a Cell-Safe transport container to issue blood to the OR. We apply a HemoTemp II indicator to each unit that is irreversible above 10 degrees C. How does everyone address the requirement to record the temperature every 4 hours or does applying the indicators solve this?

I suggest that you do a "Quick Search" (top lefthand corner of this screen) for "Coolers." There are quite a few threads on the topic, and it seems to be the consensus that blood issued to Surgery is considered by most accrediting agencies to be "storage" (not "transport"). For "storage", the blood in the coolers should be maintained within 1-6 C (not 1-10 C.)

There are also many discussions in the various threads regarding validation of the coolers, as David Saikin mentioned above.
