Transfusion Reactions

Does anyone have any information on Transfusion Reaction Data?

Is there an annual average percentage for patient Transfusion Reactions?

Other than reviewing the Patients charts what evaluations are you doing

to check for TRALI? My Medical Director wants to send out information to the Physicians on TRALI and I can't find something short and to the point.

Any help would be appreciated!

It seems like I read that 2% is a reasonable amount of reactions to expect. Unfortunately, I can't remember the reference. Any more and there could be a problem, and any more and they may not be reporting them correctly.

I don't have a good reference for TRALI, maybe you could copy info from the technical manual.

The latest AABB Association Bulletin #05-06 (about donors involved in TRALI) contains the following references to the working definition of TRALI:

1. Kleinman S, Caulfield T, Chan P, et al. Towards an understanding of transfusion-related acute lung injury: Statement of a consensus panel. Transfusion 2004;44:1774-89.

2. Toy P, Popovsky M, Abraham E, et al. Transfusion-related acute lung injury: Definition and review. Crit Care Med 2005;33:721-6.

I don't know how short they are.

The AABB bulletin reference is probably the best. We used those in conjunction with some additional data on the net to provide clinical and diagnostic information to our physicians. It's a good idea to make it short and to the point or else very few will read it. We recently had a suspected TRALI after transfusion of three FFP. The donors are currently being tested.
