QC of "rare" antisera

We are currently running controls with every patient we type or every batch of units we screen. I have worked in three other labs where controls were run once on the day of use only. I anyone else running controls with every test?

We have an IRL and we also run controls with every batch run.

We only QC these each day of use. Of course for us most of the time we would only use them once each day.

I once supervised an AABB Reference Laboratory and an active Transfusion Service. We only ran controls on the day of use. I continued to follow that practice at other transfusion servies that were both AABB and CAP approved with no adverse comments from the Inspectors/Assessors.

Our IRL runs controls with every batch mostly to assure that it actually happens. We used to run controls daily and some QC fell through the cracks. We do not necessarily use every antisera everyday so it would not be worth it to QC them all in one batch daily.
