I also worked at a facility that typically had the MLT students do a bedside slide test (after documented training). They would also bring the slide back to the lab to have the blood bank tech verify.

As SMILLER noted, a cytospin is a centrifuge. Here is the CAP requirement from the 08-21-2017 Lab General checklist:

Centrifuge Operating Speeds
Phase II
The operating speeds of centrifuges are checked at least annually as needed for the intended use, and this is done in a safe manner.
NOTE: For centrifuges with safety mechanism preventing the opening of the lid while in operation, the checks of rpm should be performed only by an authorized service representative of the manufacturer or an appropriately trained clinical engineer.
Evidence of Compliance:
✓ Records of verification of operating speeds at least annually

We also use the gravimetric method. We have never had a problem with state or CAP inspections either.
