  1. Yesterday we had a post-partum specimen for a Rhogam workup including FMH screening. The screen was 2+ macroscopically. We had no previous history and had not done any weak D testing on her, which is our protocol. Her prenatal specimen was sent to a commerical lab that most likely does not do weak D testing on D Negatives. We performed weak D testing and it was positive which invalidated the FMH screen. A Kleihaur Betke stain was negative. The physician wanted to give the Rhogam to her, which we did. When you have no history, as in this case, a situation like this in the hands of an inexperienced tech could have been misinterpreted as a VERY positive FMH screen which would have been resolved by the negative KB Stain, but would have left the tech who didn't consider that the patient might be a weak D confused.
  2. :disbeliefWe don't allow it. Our paramedics draw a "rainbow" of tubes and throw them in a ziploc and label them after they arrive with the patient. Having been transported in an ambulance as a patient, I know how busy they are working on the patient. I was grateful for their expertise, but I can' tell you how many of those bags I have seen unlabelled in the ED. As a patient, I would rather receive O negatives than take a chance on specimens not labeled at the bedside. Their procedure violates regulations.
  3. :eek:That is scary. What if there were 2 recepients on the same floor. That happens all the time here.
  4. Now that Ortho has resumed manufacuring Fetalscreen, I was wondering how many of you wil switc:confused:h back to it. It is about $25.00 more expensive. It is hard to forget all that went on with Fetalscreen I.

  6. We have a new Hettich (by Helmer) Rotofix 32A and love it. It is compact and quiet. No problems.
  7. :eek:My thoughts are with you. It might be best if you didin't mention CAP or AABB. When I did it made it worse!
  8. :haha:I bet the birds would like this also!!
  9. Ours are drawn up to a week ahead of time, but we don't do the testing until 2 days before surgery.
  10. CSL quoted me $1.25 less than Rhogam! The only advantage is IM or IV.
  11. I did the same thing, especially when I had to purchase a 10 pack of poly and never used it up.
  12. You can buy AABB's "Guidelines for Blood Utilization Review" on their web site:www.aabb.org.
  13. Thanks, but I can't open the Word documents.
  14. It is best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
  15. Immucor does not recommend the use of their complement control cells with another manufacturer's anti-C3B,C3d.
  16. We have two cardiologists who are partners and their names are French and Fry! I think this was memntioned on the Letterman show too. I am beginning to go to this tread for my daily laugh!
  17. :confused:An Ortho rep once said that if the doctor ordered Rhogam, you would have to have his/her permission to "substitute" another brand. I wonder if there was a policy stating that the substitute was routinely used in the hospital, if that would be acceptable.
  18. I still have problems calling something that has a clearly positive reaction negative. Confusing to everyone.
