Alternative Blood Supply???

We are opening a small county hospital and have only two local blood supply options. Is there an alternative blood supply solution (besides NBE) available??

Where are you located? ARC or UBS may be options depending on where you live.

We have both options. Actually just looking to help save $$$ through alternative methods that I may not be aware of.

Again depends on your state. In Michigan we have ARC and MCBC.

Is this facility affiliated with a group of hospitals or a stand alone? If affiliated, you might be able to get your supply from the main hospital and use their "buying power".

We have LifeSouth as our primary and United Blood Services as our secondary. We find UBS very helpful through the years even though we are not a full time customer.

The NBE is a viable solution for AABB members. We get 99% of our blood through the Blood Exchange and it saves us millions annually. Really - literally millions of dollars. It just takes a little work to set up the suppliers and ISBT products in your computer system. Since blood is flown in, you may need to adjust your inventory up a little, or use your local supplier as a supplement. NBE staff is great to work and do the heavy lifting. We transfuse 25,000 components annually.

If you want to shop around, I would suggest going to aabb.org or americasblood.org and searching as if you were a donor looking for somewhere to donate. Or, if you have been using NBE and notice that you are impressed with a few facilities, give them a call and see what it would take to set up some sort of contract.
