Hello-

Is anybody using electronic transfusion tags where vital signs, completion time, donor reaction are recorded i nthe LIS for the product transfused, no writing used, only electronic copy? Wondering if this is even permitted under auspices of AABB.

Based on the AABB definition of a record:

"
Record
(noun): Information captured in writing or through electronically generated media that provides objective evidence of activities that have been performed or results that have been achieved, such as test records or audit reports. Records do not exist until the activity has been performed and documented."

"
Record
(verb): To capture information for use in records through writing or electronic media."

If the information is being electronically recorded as the action is performed (real time, i.e., the electronic record is the "source" record and not copied from a paper document), then it seems the electronic record could be the sole document and would comply with the AABB Standards. If I remember correctly, this was a fairly recent change or clarification to the Standards for just that reason.

I guess the definition of "fairly recent" varies by your age, but.......

I just checked and the addition of "electronic" to the AABB definition of records occurred with the 20th edition of Standards, effective January 1, 2001.
