Billing for Antigen Testing & Other Special Processing

What is your billing practice when you recieve a request for compatibility testing and the patient does not receive the donor units and special testing is required? Do you charge the patient for the antigen testing or other special handling (i.e. washing, irradiation, etc....) if required? We would definitely not charge for the donor unit since not transfused but wonder what other current practice is reagarding the other charges. Thanks for sharing.

We do charge for antigen typing but not for irradiation or cmv neg...if not transfused. We do have an inventory of irradiated and cmv neg units and do not have to special order them.

We charge for everything needed(antigen typings, irradiation, etc.).

We do the same as cindym. We only keep A neg and Oneg irrad. units in inventory so we often need to order B or AB units or units that are CMV neg but they are almost always transfused.

We charge for the antigen typing. Irraditation and CMV neg are charged with the product, if infused.

we charge for antigen typing when we screen units. For irradiation and CMV, we charge at the time of issue.
