New BCSH guideline

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Just a quick question about the new BCSH guideline on pre-transfusion compatibility section 5.4.4.

It says that weak anti-S should be used as a control following hypochloride decontamination of our analyser. We currently use weak anti-Fya.

What controls do people use following decontamination? and has anyone any views on whether using weak anti-Fya is better or worse than using weak anti-S?

Thanks

:)

Actually, it is section 5.4.5, but hey!

It depends what you are using to decontaminate your washers. As the guidelines say, the S antigen is particularly sensitive to denaturation by hypochlorite. If you are using hypochlorite, then you should really test your washer with a weak anti-S. I don't have the exact reference, but I have got an email from Grant Webb that says he thinks the paper is by Issitt and Rygel from about 1974. The paper is entitled, I understand, "Homeopathic quantities of bleach residual after cleaning depress or abolish detection of anti-S and some Rh specificities, but not others."

If you are using something else, then a weak anti-Fya could be fine.
