Handheld device for pt. and unit verification at time of transfusion

Recommended Posts

Is anyone utilizing an electronic system to verify the correct patient is getting the correct unit of blood, similar to the way pharmacy is developing, at the time the transfusionist is ready to give the product? We would like to have a handheld device that scans the patient armband and the unit identification and verifies that the unit in hand has been prepared for the patient. If yes, is this system driven from your blood bank IS, LIS or HIS. All details will be greatly appreciated as we explore options to improve patient safety.

I think some of the LIS have this capability - we use Sunquest and I know they have it - called "Transfusion Manager". Though it's $$$ and we'll not be able to afford it for a while!

Sunquest also has a "Collection Manager" that will print a specimen label on a hand-held device after scanning the wristband.

I would assume that other LIS would have something similar.

We are also planning to go with the TAR from meditech. It requires the use of BMV ( bedside med verification) from meditech and some wireless tablets. We are also going live with Client server/6.0 in July. I will let you know how it works for us.
