From our policy -

1. The Registered Nurse will ensure written consent has been obtained for a blood or blood product transfusion.

a. Exempted from the consent requirement are factor concentrates, IV serum immune globulin, and albumin because prior heat treatment or pasteurization significantly lessens the risk of infectious complication.

We require informed consent for all blood products and derivatives, including albumin, clotting factors, and RhoGam. It's just easier for us to keep it "all or none". We keep albumin, clotting factors and RhoGam in the Blood Bank. Anything that the Pharmacy keeps (IVIG) does not require consent. I would love to have the Pharmacy take the albumin, but I keep losing that fight.

Informed consent is required for every blood product that is transfused at our facility. We figured it would be too confusing if we make it required for some and not for others. Besides, state inspectors love to look at forms.
