  1. We were having the same trouble that you have been experiencing with the new Ortho 0.8% screening cells. We went to aliquoting about 1 ml of each screening cell for each of our reagent racks and then discarding anything remaining after a 24 hour period. We only QC the cells once each day. This seems to have worked well for us and has cleared up the false positives that we had been seeing.
  2. We have had nothing but trouble since the new screening cells have come out for Gel. It seems that we are getting false positive results all over the place. Upon further investigation, it appears to be due to the fact that Ortho reduced the antibiotic in the cells by six fold. Since we are a fairly large hospital, and leave our screening cells out all day, this decrease appears to have caused this effect. Now we have to make aliquots each day, and place them out. At the end of the day we throw away any extra, and get out new the following day. What a PAIN!
  3. We are a 4 hospital group in San Diego California. We are still doing the ABO/Rh and DAT (IgG) on all babies of O Pos moms, as well as on all babies whose mother is Rh negative. Try as we might to get away from this practice, our doctors simply do not want to give it up.
  4. We are a 4 hospital system in San Diego, Ca. Three of our four facilities have observed the same sort of reactions in screening cell 2, lot VSS 104, that you have described. We noticed that the reactions are repeatable using the SAME vial of screening cells. But if we open a fresh set of vials of the same lot, the reaction goes away. All panels performed with gel have been completely negative. We have observed this "reaction" in approximately 12 patients over the past week. We have also observed this same reaction in screening cell 3 once. We have reported this to Ortho. They are tracking it, so it would be helpful to Ortho if anyone else observing similar reactions reports it to them as well.
