NedB, My understanding is that the reason you do more than one calibration set is because of the difference in VISCOSITY of the reagents - Albumin (22%) is significantly different in viscosity from saline, therefore if you use albumin or high protein anti-D, then you DO need to do an albumin calibration. But LISS is not significantly different in viscosity from saline, and therefore wouldn't need it's own calibration. PeG is irrelevant because you are not centrifuging for agglutination with PeG in the tube - you've washed the PeG away. You are actually centrifuging with AHG, which again (at least for us) is not of a viscosity significantly different than saline. What do I use my serofuge for? Test systems with a viscocity not significantly different from saline, and washing. Washing would be a separate calibration because of the huge difference in saline volume... So, that's why we just do the saline style cal, and a wash cal. What are your thoughts on that line of logic?
  2. We do screens in gel and types in tubes. I do what kslaforce does.
  3. You can use Avery Labels (or other brand) and use your word processor (like Microsoft Word) to make the labels you want.
  4. We use gel Selectogen for the screen. If both cells positive, we run the few marked cells (@ - to rule out everything but D) on gel Ortho A panel. If we've issued RhIg recently, we call it "D presumably due to RhIg". If we haven't issued RhIg, we call the floor and ask if the pt has received it. If it cannot be verified that the pt received RhIg, we do a titer and report the results of the titer.
  5. We have validated our coolers to keep 2 units 1-6 for 23 hours [but we don't let them stay out that long]. They are 10 Quart Rubbermaids from Wal-Mart ($10). Stamped on the bottoms is: Part# 2A21 CAV# 3. We also put Safe-T-Vue 10's (temperature indicators) on each unit. We use 4 Cryo-Gels: 2 kept frozen in our -30 plasma freezer, 2 kept in our 1-6 fridge. A frozen Cryo-Gel goes on the bottom, then a 1-6 Cryo-Gel, then the 2 units of blood, then a 1-6 Cryo-Gel, then the frozen Cryo-Gel tops it off. We rotate the Cryo-Gels. (We didn't buy these, just rescue them from reagent shipments.) The Cryo-Gels and the blood take up nearly all the space inside the cooler. We could probably get 1 more unit in there [but we don't]. We revalidate annually by placing temperature probes (2) at the interfaces between the units and the 1-6 Cryo-Gels.

Here's what we do: We have a Helmer DH4 Model Calibration of Digital Controler Annual Decontaminate and Refill Monthly Lubricate basket assembly Quarterly Hi Alarm Semi-Annually The manual says weekly for the deconatmination and refill, but we have very low usage and a cover for the thawer when not in use, so weekly was too often for us.
  7. We've had our Helmer freezer (IPF128) for about a year. No problems yet!
  8. We do cord DAT's routinely in gel on babies from type O, Rh neg, or clinically significant antibody moms. I have been here 6 months. I have not heard any complaint where the doctor is confused by a negative DAT when he feels it ought to have been positive given the clinical picture.

  10. Community Blood Center of Kansas City (savealifenow.org) offers a frozen pool of 5 cryo. We havent' started using it, but intend to. After thawing the 5-pool, I don't think we will pool 2 5-pools together for a 10pack dose. I think we will just give them the 2 bags to infuse.
  11. You could use the AutoFilter function in Excell to create a selected cell panel. But, you do have to mess with getting it into excell...
