Competency Standards

This question is for all of the Transfusion Centers out there:

For your annual competencies are you following the AABB standards for your employee competencies or are you following the CLIA standards? I understand that donor centers are held to a much more stringent standard via CLIA & FDA, which requires annual direct observation of all employees for all routine activities performed. We are having a difference of opinions about the requirements and I don't want to get bogged down in unnecessary compliance activity. Please let me know the extent of your own activities so I can address the topic from a more global perspective.

Thank-you in advance for your input!

As a transfusion service, my annual direct obersvation is to watch a Type and Screen with at least one unit crossmatch from specimen arrival to issue. That covers virtually every technique we employee on a regular basis. Everything else if monitored by record review and error documentation.

Keep it simple and manageable.

:bonk:

Exactly what I want to do, and what transfusion centers in my former state do. Thanks for the input!
