This is an e-mail from CAP to a colleague regarding TRM.45268, dated 5/20/08:

This e-mail is to confirm our telephone conversation earlier today regarding TRM.45268.

TRM.45268 is intended to apply only to collections of blood that will yield a platelet component. During our conversation, you indicated that your laboratory collects whole blood for autologous donation only. This checklist item should be marked not applicable in your situation.

TRM.45268 will be revised in a future edition to clarify its intent. If you are cited for this as a deficiency during your upcoming inspection, you may contest this as a deficiency by providing an explanation of your services and reason for contesting this deficiency and the item will be reviewed.

Please contact me if I can be of further assistance on this issue.

Sincerely,

Well, I had my CAP inspection today, and my only citation was for this standard TRM.45268. I called CAP and they indeed said that this standard only applies to products that will yield a platelet product. The standard is going to be clarified in the next CAP checklist revision.

If an inspector cites you for this standard and you don't collect blood for platelet products (such as only auto donors, like we do), you can formally contest the citation and CAP will remove it.
