ours is 30 mins., and after that we don't take units back. that unit is considered "discarded". we still tell the floor they have another 3:30 hrs. or less to give to patient.

hi all, where i work, that's how we pattern our policy for pre-op testing, though there are always "surprises", surgeon is ready to incise, and calling blood bank for available blood producst.. and we dont even have a blood type on that patient. emergency uncross is ready for action. yeah!! let the fun begins...

Hi everyone, My first POST.. I am still not sure what is the best way of monitoring unit of blood after leaving the BB. In our facility we have a temp indicator. Also, please advise what you tell the nurses the "reason" why we do not accept those units back to BB after half hour, but is allowed to hang almost 4 hours during transfusion. Thanks.. jem
