We recently had a situation where we tried to avoid calling a patient back for a CBC; the patient had an EDTA tube drawn for blood bank. The blood bank supervisor was uncomfortable with hemo using the edta tube from blood bank. She felt the needle that would puncture the CBC tube (by the analyzer) would introduce contaminants to the blood bank specimen which could result in possible in-vitro reactions. What are your thoughts on using the blood bank specimen for a CBC? If you do not recommend using it do you have a reference that you could give me?
