  1. It really isn't a funny excuse as to why they can't donate, but rather a sad ruling that was made. People can't donate, because they are not allowed to by the standards. Being in the military in the early eighties removes a lot of military and their dependants (spouse and children) from ever donating. This is due to the Mad Cow exposure during that time frame. It angers some that there are no tests to confirm or deny anything, yet these people are deferred for life. How sad is this!!!! Good people that do not use drugs, or sleep around, yet their blood is deferred. I for one would rather have their blood rather than some of the blood from other people. But I don't make the rules!!!
  2. Our lab currently has CPSI, it has a lot of issues and is not user friendly. Getting CPSI to correct an issue is a big proplem and takes forever. Years ago we had CITATION and that system was great, very user friendly as it was designed by people in the lab~~ what a concept. As stated before, check around, never ask the company as they will tell you whatever you want to hear as a car salesman would!!! Talk to other hospitals that actually use it that you can trust!!! In this age, management looks at what is the best price and not the best product, remember you get what you pay for!!! But most labs are governed by people above that do not have to deal with the computer system, therefore it simply doesn't matter what is best except in their wallet!!! SAD BUT TRUE!!!
  3. ] Relax, All that CAP inspectors go by is exactly what is asked in the checklist, So if you follow the CAP Checklist, you will have no problems. As stated in a previous entry, you must go by the package inserts, but refer to the CAP questions, and if you are in doubt, you can call CAP and they will help answer any questions that you may have. ALSO- when you get inspected, keep in mind that it is another hospital that does the inspection, and how they interpet the question, if you disagree with the deficiency, you may dispute it and have it removed. I had to do that and had two removed and therefore had no defeciencies!!!!
  4. We do not use "HOLD"specimens, either they want it or they don't. It simply causes too much confusion. and the end result is the lab gets screamed at when something is not done correctly So we do not allow "hold specimens, and this works very well. We get orders for Type/Rh/Abscr, and if they deceide they meed a X-Match, we pull the specimen and run it, (within 3 days, after that a new specimen is obtained.) It really does not take that long to run, so why go crazy trying to figure out what is wanted, when every doctor has different ideas of when they want a X-Match. If they want it they must order it, a WIN WIN way to handle it:)
