Mabel, I've heard that spun HCT suggestion for validation and it just doesn't work as the RBC and WBC don't really separate in the tube.

My lab is collecting PMNs and we wish to calculated the donor RBC loss. Our counter gets fooled by the high WBC concentration and gives incorrect HCTs. I've found in the manual a means to adjust the HCT using the following: Adjusted Collect Hematocrit = ([RBC] - ([WBC]/1000) x MCV) / 10 Does anyone use this equation? Has anyone validated it and how? Thanks!

Is anyone filtering their pooled WB derived platelets? If so, do you check filter recovery like we do for RBC filtrations? How?

Thanks for the reply Cliff. Do you remember the days when WB was collected in something other than CPD. Why is ACD not used for WB collections? Are RBC collected in ACD any better? Brian

Would anyone like to share their opinion as to whether they feel aphresis RBC are better or worse that WB derived RBC? Are RBC collected in CPD higher quality than RBC collected in ACDA?

Why hasn't the FDA mandated the leukoreduction of all blood components? Wouldn't this make life easier for all blood bankers? Brian
