  1. Good one! Some of my fav's in the blood bank are OOtologous blood, autojelous blood and now irrodent blood.
  2. We have found in our facility that Jka suspected reactions that aren't following the rule books can sometimes work best in a Poly gel card...ie.IgG and C3d combined. When are these pesky antibodies going to learn the rules?
  3. HaHa! Better than the "Well, just give him O negs then" response when you call with an antibody issue!!:cries:
  4. Whoa--I would be afraid to have nurses in charge of transfusion reaction decisions. That would be totally scary in our facility! We review all completed transfusion records. We, unfortunately, not infrequently see documentation of transfusion reactions that were not even recognized by the nurse and were therefore not evaluated at the time. They will usually call us if their patient develops chills or urticaria but sometimes don't notify us if their patient has a temperature spike during the transfusion!!:cries: I can not even imagine the education process it would take to trust empowering them with making the ultimate decision. I applaud you if you have figured out how to make it work!!
  5. :D:D;)Love it! The things that make us laugh.... Even better in my book than my "infallible" statement.:)
  6. I have thought of about 10 numbers already I would like to give out---none of them are appropriate to post, however. What we see/hear on a daily basis is just incredible---incredibly frightening to me.
  7. Case in point! Yet another "OOPPSS"! Oh well, if that's the worst thing I do today then I will consider the day a success!!
  8. The error was not good (obviously) but her sharing her story with new techs is GREAT! We are infallible--we all make errors on occasion. It is human nature. To hopefully prevent a new Tech from making the same error you have made in your past is a great idea. I applaud her for her willingness to share her "OOPS" with others.
  9. Well said Mabel. I guess sometimes we all forget that anyone could potentially be reading our posts.
  10. PRECISELY who I was thinking of at the time of my post!!! I can add 2 brainless nurses to the list after work today!!! UUGGHH! By the way, what is a "vounteers" that I apparently referenced in my post? I hate finding type-O's after the fact!
  11. Ha Ha! I would love to investigate the efficacy of platelets that had been frozen!
  12. I have seen irritated, irradicated and irriadated requests many times. Once years ago I even saw 1 order for irronadid blood. I still haven't figured out how to provide a product that doesn't exist!! Uggghhhh!
  13. We not infrequently see an admitting diagnosis of abdominal pain on an obviously VERY pregnant woman--ie. about to deliver. I have no clue why they can't just put "In Labor" or something of the sort. I just don't get it.
  14. Had a new one the other day....a request for "Irrodent" blood. It was the first time any of us have seen "irrodent"--it did provide quite a good laugh for all of us. Lots of jokes about mice/rats and other rodents that might possibly be donating the blood we need were made. It did make for a fun day!
  15. Why would someone want to irradiate the same unit twice? The logic behind that escapes me.
  16. Oh My! The things we hear.....Do some of them scare anyone else?
  17. I saw a new admitting diagnosis Tuesday---"Sick Patient". Hmm, I wonder who would go to the ER if they weren't sick?! It did provide a nice laugh for us in the Blood Bank.
  18. On a different note.... I had the distinct pleasure of attending another teleconference this morning. The topic was passively transfused antibodies--ie. incompatible plasma in products transfused to recipients. Red cells, platelet pheresis and plasma were all discussed. Question: Does anyone have references on an Anti-T??? Thanks in advance.
  19. Liz, It took me a moment also to get the abbreviation. I believe the reference is to "Shut The F--- up"! Bxcall1, Surely you made that post in jest. If my interpretation is correct of the initials you used, I could never imagine being told such a thing in a work environment. Personally, I would be totally and completely offended by such a comment. Perhaps you could try the suggestions of some of the previous posts and have a key phrase or a hand movement or something of the sort.
  20. How frequently do most of you out there disinfect your surgery coolers? I have always wondered about how others do this. It seems to be a puzzling issue to me as the outside of the bags of products we put in the coolers are certainly not sterile. Our gloves in the BB are not sterile, the hands of the person picking up the blood cooler are not sterile, etc etc. Any thoughts from anyone out there on this? Thanks in advance.
  21. Malcolm, I thought for sure I would get a response from you after this post! I am feeling neglected! Hope all is well! Keep up your informative posts! They are VERY helpful.
  22. Limper55--Please remember we are all professionals. We all have our own experiences and knowledge to bring to this forum. We don't always agree with each other--but I believe we respect everyone's opinions/procedures/whatever. I have learned more from this site then I ever did in college/clinicals/etc etc. I hope you will benefit equally from the forum. I will look forward to seeing your contributions to all of our advancement in our careers.
