Just For Fun
I worked in a hospital where the Blood Bank was actually part of the entire clinical lab so we got to intereact with Hematology. They would always come in and give us a heads up if there was a very low Hgb in a patient. On this day one of the techs came in holding a sample in her hand explaining the CBC results on this patient isn't accurate. She then went on to explain that she stuck a stick in his pee hole. I asked "What? You stuck a stick in his pee hole???" She says yes! We went back and forth a couple more times as my eyes continued to widen more and more. Finally it became clear when she said "Yes, I stuck a stick in the sample for patient Espijo and there's a clot in it!".

Thermco blood bank thermometer
Curious how users for the Tempcheck work around the +2 temperature accuracy. Their brochure states it "measure a temperature range of -40C to +40C with an accuracy of +2C". Does that imply the temperature reading for a unit must be between 3-4C because of this "accuracy"?

Timer Calibration
Hi, Does anyone know if it's necessary to re-calibrate the timers used for patient testing? These are the 3 channel timers used to time incubations etc., not serofuges or centrifuges. Thanks!

Tropitronics ARK Plasma Defroster Microwave
Stacy, Do you have any feedback you can share on how you like the ARK Bio? We thaw a high volume of plasma here so I'm not sure this is the best product for us. Thanks.

patient signature on preop specimens
Thanks Malcom. I couldn't find a standard or regulation regarding this but it looks like we will have to continue using paper.

patient signature on preop specimens
Hi, My hosptial is converting to paperless requistions and I wondered how other paperless facilities handle the patient signature for preop specimens stating they have not been transfused or pregnant within the last 3 months. Do you have a separate form for the patient to sign or is there a way for them to sign "electronically". Thanks!

Test pH of Saline
I was recently advised to test the pH of my saline after weekly decontamination. Does anyone else do this routinely and if you do, what method do you use to test the pH? I have been unable to find pH strips that are within 7.1-7.3 which is the range of the saline we use. Thanks!

Galileo vs Tango unspecific positive reactions
Hi Mary, We currently use the ECHO and are also getting the TANGO. I would be highly interested in obtaining copies of the side-by-side studies. Thanks so much, Julie
