Been able to do it constantly from right to left. Now I must try from left to right
Happy New Year!

Just wanted to say how much I am enjoying this thread! Love reading about the upcoming festivities and travels. I hope everyone has a joyful and safe season!
And congrats on the new little ones!

We only take asymptomatic donors (even for the autos).
-
I haven't got any fans that want to come into my lab - nobody likes me!
:cries::cries::paranoid::paranoid:
Sorry - I couldn't resist - but I should have done.
:devilish::devilish:
Malcom - you crack me up! (in the best possible way)

Anyone know the exact reference to the error correction in the cGMP standards - I'd really appreciate it - I can't seem to locate the reference and my compliance officer is asking. Thanks!

What is your SOP for sticking through tattoos for autologous whole blood collection? We have always avoided venipuncture directly through the tattoo for all donors and patients. However, we recently had a patient with a sleeve on one arm and a new tattoo- 2 weeks old- on the other arm over the antecubital fossa. Thanks!
We have no SOP for drawing blood (auto or allo) in a tattoo'd site - However we do draw these donors. One guy used to point to his arm and tell the phlebotomist - Here is my vein - right between eyes! (And of course, for allo donors it must be at least 12 months since the last tat)

In actuality, if their vital signs were within your procedural normal limits, you would not necessarily even know about "heavy excercise" before donation. I do agree with the pre-hydration if the donor does let you know.

Brenda--try this website:
http://www.medtraining.org/corpsite/
Where I work, we use this for twice per year competencies in all areas of the lab. They offer online quizzes that you can take and have good reading material to go along with the quizzes in each department. There's a lot on there for Blood Bank, too!
I use this site to do make up tests for the donor center and it has worked out well. Our lab dept also uses for some competencies such as customer service, safety, etc.

I am looking for an agreement letter (to use as a starter) to send to transfusion services stating that they agree to accept (minor) antibody positive RBC donor units. Does anyone have anything like that?
Does your institution accept these units?
I am a non-technical person that has been working in a donor center setting for 15 years and before that in a TS, so I could use any help I could get.
Thanks!

Cliff - this has been an issue that our donor centers have been struggling with on a continuing basis. Can you share a little bit more about what you developed for your facility, please. Thanks!
-
Our donor centers have developed a job aid to help ensure that the right questions are asked. Of course this only works if the donor tells you that they went to Mexico
-
Our Medical Directors have decided that we can accept these donors immediately.
-
Our donor centers will take 15 & 16 year old donors (usually directed) with a parental authorization and MD approval. State law in California states that 17 year old donors are acceptable.
-
Currently we record the lot # on a daily QC sheet.

I work in a Donor Center that will be implementing ISBT and a new computer system at the same time. Our customers will be using both ISBT and Codabar.

I would like to see a module that was customizable for both the meds list and malaria travel areas. We currently update our meds list 3-4 times a year, but could do it more frequently (if necessary) through a modular product. The company that I work for IDM is currently developing a computer assisted interactive interview that would include this information. We are looking for feedback on what blood centers would desire in this type of product. Any suggestions?

Thanks Lynn. Where are the gift cards for?
We have a variety of gift cards, including Starbucks, Red Lobster, Baskin Robbins and Subway. Also have movie tickets - 1 for WB and 2 for pheresis.
-
For funding of gifts only, we give gift cards for $5 for whole blood (allogeneic only) and $10 for plateletpheresis. Also T-shirts are available.
-
On the donor questionnaire, we request the SSN or driver's license number. Isn't there a regulation about needing positive identification? To fill this regulation we asked to see a photo ID (such as DL) first, then, if that is not available we have various IDs that can be used (ex. credit card with picture, medical card, etc.) We also emphasize that they need to bring the photo ID when they make their appointments.

I would be happy to discuss the topic further--I would like to create a checklist for "Choosing the right BBIS".--CC
Please share that list with us when you write it! 8) Am currently part of a team to find a new BB/DC system and I can use all the help I can get!

In June we will be holding a 25 year anniversary celebration. I am currently in search of fun activites for employees, donors, community to do either at the center during an Open House or perhaps during special drives we have planned. Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcomed!

Work - In- Progress - We are currently looking into reading the cultures at 12 hours. This seems to be the community standard here.
-
Now I suppose you want me to post something there?
-
I was thinking since this is also about Donors, maybe an area about recruitment - both successful and not so successful, could be added.
Exact or default volume for red cells?

Amen to that!
