Defining Severe Donor Reactions

Recommended Posts

Our existing SOP classifies any loss of consciousness (LOC) as being a severe reaction. However, our new Medical Director is of the mindset that a more definitive assessment of the LOC is required. She feels that a LOC of a couple seconds could be classified as a moderate reaction as opposed to severe.

Does anyone have an SOP that clearly defines when a LOC would fall into a moderate vs severe classification? Any assistance or input would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks!

Our SOP states that moderate reactions include fainting, incontinence and irregular pulse or any light (slight reaction) which lasts over 15 minutes. Severe reactions include chest pain, involuntary movements and cardiac arrest.

Ten years ago I was employed by the ARC and this was the same classification in use then.
