We recently got a new freezer for the Blood Bank. I am performing my first validation. I am comparing the NIST against the digital display as well as the chart and our own, seperate thermometer. I cannot find any documentation to support how much difference is acceptable between the NIST and the digital read/our thermometer/ etc. Some places I have read say 0.5 degrees which seems very tight to me. Another facility I work for uses 1.0 degree difference which seems more acceptable and able to obtain but I have not found any supporting documentation anywhere! Can someone help me? When validating, what difference is acceptable between the NIST and the other thermometers, be it the probes in the unit or your own internal thermometers?

I’m looking to replace blood bank refrigerators, freezers and shock freezers. I’ve reviewed manufacturers and products via the internet, as well as, read past blogs. It appears that the leading manufacturers are Helmer, Follett and Thermo Scientific. Any information that you can provide on quality, reliability, service costs, total cost of ownership, temperature distribution, temperature recording and how long products will maintain the required temperature during a power outage would be helpful. I may take this opportunity to move away from chart recorder to an electronic monitoring system. Does anyone have any experience with them? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Lucky me - I get a new ultra-low freezer next quarter! The old one has been hanging on by a thread for several years now. It's time for it to retire. I was hoping that Helmer's new ultra-lows would be out by now, but they're not going to be on the market until some time in 2015. So that takes them out of the running. We are thinking Panasonic/Sanyo because the one in send outs has been very reliable. So I need opinions from those of you who have purchased or evaluated ultra-lows recently. Sanyo? Horizon Scientific? Nor-Lake? Anything else? Thanks!

Any experience with the Panasonic Twin Guard ultra-low freezers? I have a new ultra-low freezer budgeted for first quarter of 2014, replacing a crappy Revco. Our sendout area has an older Sanyo that has performed well. My boss is intrigued by the Panasonic Twin Guards. The prices look pretty good, but I haven't seen any comments on them. Anyone? If you've purchased an ultra-low within the past year or so, what brand did you get? Are you happy with it? Thanks!
