When performing antigen typing on units for transfusion do you charge for all units tested or only those that are crossmatched to the patient?

  • But if the donor was previously tested for any other patient and that patient was charged, you can't charge the current patient for antigen typing that particular unit.

I was told I could only charge for the units they receive. Do you have the CMS code for that charge by any chance?

Yes we charge for the antigen testing whether or  not it is  positive. or negative

The patient who currently needs the screening done gets charged for however many antigens are tested.  Pos or neg, transfused or no, does not matter.  I would think that the charge code would be the same regardless of what the antigen typing results would be.

All units tested.  If tested for another patient though do not charge again for the second patient.
