Hi everyone! I am reviewing old procedures and am looking for some references about QC on body fluid differentials. The Cell-Chex we use to QC the count package insert lists values for manual differentials, so it was put into the procedure, but I have found zero documentation that it even needs to be done. I have also reviewed numerous body fluid procedures and have yet to find another one that says QC on a manual differential has to be done. We don't do QC on CBC manual differentials, 'QCing' the slide just checks the stain quality (which is recorded every day anyway). Anyone have any input? Thanks!

Interesting observations about QC for manual diffs here.  We had an inspector some years ago tell us that we have to do QC on cell counts for body fluids but nothing about diffs.  The only thing we do is a once yearly competency for diffs, and that is only for CBCs.

I agree with Scott - even in hyper-regulated NYS there is no requirement for differential "QC", just stain quality as already mentioned. (But we do have to start doing UA microscopic QC ... )

Hi Dcamp67, I wonder if the question of QC for body fluid diffs and not whole blood manual diffs, arise because WBC's are not nearly as common to body fluids as compared to whole blood and as such perhaps a broader empirical understanding of variables of the resolution of WBC's in the matrix of whole blood is by far better noted and therefore removes the consideration for the practice of QC for manual whole blood diffs as compared to body fluid diffs. In other words the variables of WBC resolution in the matrix of body fluids may not be as well noted or understood or as practiced as compared to whole blood. I hope this helps some even though, for me, it just raises more questions.
