How many of your blood banks order the the RHIG (Rh Immune Globulin) workup (fetal screen) after performing testing on the cord blood (ABO/Rh, DAT)  and finding that the baby is Rh Pos? Do you then look up the mother and if she is RH negative order the RHIG.

Or, is it the responsibility of the physican?

We do an Rh type on all OBs predelivery, so we know which babies should have cord blood testing performed and then, which mom's are candidates for Rho(D) immune globulin. The physician/nurse is responsible for ordering the workup, but we are the backup to make sure it happens.

Our result includes "Candidate?" where we result "yes" or "no". This documentation helps the nurses know right away whether the mom needs RhIG or not.  We credit the patient account for any testing not performed but resulted.
