We are trying to update our pediatric transfusions. We are struggling to getting the right fit for our small need. We are looking at options for splitting and aliquoting units. One option brought to me by the nursery staff is called Hemo-Nate. This is a 18 micron filter set. Anyone have any experience with this product or this size of filter?

Thank you

positive:  small dead space, very little wastage

negative:  can cause hemolysis if used with red cells

We use blood administration sets that are BD syringes with in-line filters (standard 150 micron size).  I know of two manufacturers (links below; there may be more) that make these syringes and have used both with or without a Sterile Connection Device; both perform well and one has a "spikeless" option if you will always have the SCD.  We have never used an 18 micron size filter for blood product preparation and discontinued the use of a 20-40 micron filter years ago - we used to use for factor prep and neonatal transfusions before these in-line sets were available.
