A new procedure in the lab allows reading 0.5 degree increments despite the 76 mm immersion thermometer having a resolution of 1 degree. For example, if the mercury level is between the 36 and 37 degree lines, one is allowed to write 36.5 on the record.

 

I have always been under the impression that one can only read according to the resolution of an instrument, i.e., to the nearest whole number if the thermometer does not have a fraction of a degree calibration. I am concerned that this may be an issue during an audit.

We've never been cited (FDA and JCAHO) or even commented on for recording thermometer readings of 0.5 incriments.

Good question Elizabeth!  I thought mercury thermometers went away a long time ago.
