Does anyone stock their emergency helicopter with thawed plasma?  Ours wants to take plasma along with the blood they carry so they can give the proper ratio of plasma to RBCs from the beginning on massive transfusions.

We don't at the moment Mabel. Our HEMS team initially use Tranexamic acid to help with the bleeding before they start transfusing red cells.

tcoyle, how do you rotate it?  Wait till it has only 2 days left then bring it back to the Blood Bank and thaw 2 more?  or whenever you have someone in house that could use it and you could extend the dating by thawing new units for the helipad fridge? Does your night shift swap it out if they need it or only day shift?

I contacted the FDA to be sure I could supply an unlicensed product (thawed plasma) to the company that contracts with our hospital for medical transport.  She said it was okay as long as it didn't cross a state line.

The lab will check the helipad refrigerator each shift and restock as needed, or if contacted.  The TP is brought back to the lab when it has ~24 hours of life left.  We are a pretty busy place, so using that product isn't really an issue.  We also keep TP (usually A's and O's) on hand so we having it ready to stock, again isn't an issue.
