Can any one tell me if the phelobotimist signature is required for a Rh Immune globulin specimen? We currently require the signature of the phelobotimist and would like to discontinue that requirement since it causes us to have to redraw specimens drawn in the ED for a Type and Rh if the patient is Rh negative and the doctor wants a Rh Immuneglobulin injection.

Thanks

Tony

  • Who is your accrediting agency?  Do you use a computerized laboratory information system?  We don't require phlebotomist initials/signature on the blood sample container label because that information

The AABB states there has to be a mechanism in place to identify the date and ID of the person who drew the blood from the patient when requesting  blood, components, tests and derivatives.

But, I don't understand why you are redrawing the patient. Is the initial blood work not including a BB tube to hold or do those samples not include the phlebotomist initials?

We don't require phlebotomist initials/signature on the blood sample container label because that information is captured in the LIS in the Collect/Receive blood sample routine after entry by the phlebotomist.
