Hi--we are changing how we charge for outpatient blood draws and I'm wondering if we should charge for inpatient draws (done by phlebotomists, not nurses) as well? Does anyone know if there are rules about this?

We have a "venipuncture " charge that is entered on morning rounds. That way a patient will only get charged once a day. We do not charge if a nurse collects the sample.

We are mostly nurse collect but have a "veni" charge that we use when laboratory personel draw (either outpatient or inpatient).

We have a charge for IP draws now (done by lab) but it is used mostly for counting "units of service" so we can compare our productivity to other benchmarks. Many accounts are paid under DRGs so what we choose to "charge" an IP is somewhat moot in those cases although our total costs are eventually fed into the formulae that CMS uses to decide how much to pay for DRGs.
