Hi All,

Can you tell me why a provider would order a KB stain on an RH positive mom?

Thanks!

To deteremine if there has been a fetal-maternal bleed, to quantitate the amount of the bleed and to determine if the fetus is at risk and additional intervention required. Not an unusual request, particuarly if the mother has experienced some type of trauma to the abdominal area.

You would see this when patient is involved in accident/had abdominal trauma. Reason: to acess amout of fetal bleed.

Remember KB stain is a quantitative test to measure fetal bleed by counting fetal cells.

where as Fetal screen is a qualitative test to detect fetal bleed by looking for RH postive(mother's) cells.

Good answer, SMW! We often see the KB Stain ordered if the pregnant woman has been in a vehicle accident or falled down the stairs.
