We are new to CAP surveys and this is my first transfusion one. We`ve been sent the automated survey JAT-B 2012. This asks for group, screening, crossmatching and antibody ID. The problem is that we only do automated blood group and antibody screens. All our crossmatching and antibody ID is done manually. So what do I do with the CAP survey? Do I just leave those sections blank? Or do I put some sort of code in that explains these tests are not automated?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Just leave it blank, it states that on the paper work somewhere.

If you are using these surveys to meet regulatory requirements you need to be also getting a survey which covers the manual work you are doing. It sounds like you may also need the comprehensive blood bank survey. Call CAP for advice..

I agree with both of the previous posters. We only do types and screens on our automation and therefore, we only do those tests on the automation for the CAP survey. I get the comprehensive surveys from CAP for all manual testing.

same as kirkaw...

Same with us. Only test what you normally do with automation. If you call CAP they will tell you the same.

Can you use the comprehensive survey on automated instruments? Or will I have to get both surveys once I get automation?

You need both survey as comprehensive has serum and cells separate in vials and you would not do the same with your patients. Automated survey comes with whole blood specimens.

Thank you all for your posts on this topic. I also have the Comprehensive Transfusion Medicine Survey so that will meet all our manual testing needs for CAP. For the automated survey I will do as Kirkaw and aakupaku say and report only the groups and screens as they are our only automated tests.

We also perform JAT, I suggest heading the additional warning that comes with this survey and complete the testing before 7 days. As aakupaku mentioned, these are whole blood samples, and they will hemolyze.
